Once upon a time, in the year 2021, Meta sent an invitation to its users, asking them if they would be willing to “contribute to a dataset of in-the-wild amateur drawings to its Animated Drawings Demo.” More than 3.2 million visitors, including those who shared their designs on social media, visited the site, according to Meta. About 6.7 million pictures were shared altogether. Meta further on the approach, saying, “The browser-based demo allowed people to upload images, verify or fix a few annotation predictions, and receive a short animation of their humanlike character within their drawing.”
The AI model has finally reached a level of sophistication where it can turn such “amateur drawings” into working animations. “We structured the task of generating an animation from a single drawing of a figure as a series of subtasks: human figure detection, segmentation, pose estimation, and animation,” Meta said in a blog post.
Doodles may be animated with Meta’s latest artificial intelligence initiative.
The corporation added that the motivation stems from a desire to empower consumers. Researchers and professionals may create tools to analyze the information of simple drawings with more ease and precision. Meta remarked that this might pave the way for novel hybrid digital/physical experiences, such as novel narrative techniques and wider access to the arts.
Meta hopes “that it will be of interest to other practitioners — both AI researchers and members of the broader research community” by open sourcing the animation pipeline code and this dataset. Also, the firm stated its expectation that the “work will make it easier for other researchers to explore tools and techniques specifically tailored to using AI to complement human creativity.”
